Guelph, Ont. (March 1, 2008) – The Federal government has announced it will provide $1 million in funding for the large-scale relocation and renovation of the Guelph Civic Museum – a move that
Federal Conservative candidate Gloria Kovach says “is an important step in seeing this project move forward.”
“It is about more thank bricks and mortar. It is about preserving our culture and history for future generations,” said Ms. Kovach. This is one of the largest grants ever provided by the Cultural Spaces Canada Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, added Ms. Kovach.
The funding will be used to relocate the Guelph Civic Museum to the Loretto Convent, a heritage limestone building in downtown Guelph. The grant is also earmarked renovations to the 150-year-old convent, which will double the Museum’s current size and allow for greater programming and curatorial facilities.
“This relocation project will allow residents of Guelph and visitors to the region to learn more about the city’s history, while enhancing the city’s rich architectural heritage,” said the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages.
“In addition, the support we are providing for the renovation project of the new home of the Guelph Civic Museum demonstrates our commitment to giving Canadians access to their culture and heritage.”
The Cultural Spaces Canada Program contributes to initiatives that improve access to the arts, as well as programs that improve the physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.
