Increased Transportation Costs Lead to Skyrocketing Food Prices

Guelph ON (Aug 21, 2008) - Today, the CBC is reporting that a watermelon at a grocery store in Labrador was selling for $55.00. Fresh fruit is normally more expensive in remote areas due to transportation costs, and recent fuel price increases have taken their toll.

"The head of the Atlantic Trucking Association recently estimated that Stephane Dion's Carbon Tax scheme would drive up the price of a head of lettuce to $8.00 a head", said Gloria Kovach, Conservative candidate for Guelph. "My opponents have said that I was exaggerating, but this watermelon shows the staggering effect that the added cost of the carbon tax would have on consumers, particularly in remote areas".

Also today, the Premier of  Nova Scotia, Rodney MacDonald ripped into Dion's Carbon Tax. MacDonald said that "the higher cost of fuel will only drive up the cost of everything else that depends on fuel for production or delivery".

"It should be noted that the Carbon Tax is not an environmental policy, it is a tax policy", said Kovach. "It is a massive tax grab that will allow the Liberals to pay for their $62.5 billion in spending promises for their interests."
