Guelph, Ont. (July 25, 2008) – The Conservative Government today called for a byelection to be held in Guelph in September. Voting will take place on September 8th.
“The race is on, and I’m ready to go,” said Federal Conservative Candidate Gloria Kovach. “My team is organized, excited, and growing every day.”
"This by-election is an opportunity to take a stand against Dion's carbon tax - a permanent new tax that will drive up the price of gas, electricity and everything else and elect someone with experience as a mom, a nurse and a councillor to fight for ordinary families."
“I also recognize this is going to be a tough fight, and I look forward to debating the issues that are important to Guelph citizens,” said Kovach.
“When I talk to people on the street, over and over again I hear about concerns over the economy, health care, and taxes. That is why I voted against city council’s decision to begin 2009 budget deliberations with a 6.5% tax increase.
“This is an unfair burden for Guelph taxpayers already dealing with skyrocketing fuel and oil prices.”
The Guelph seat has been vacant since April 7th, after the Liberal Member of Parliament resigned.
