Q&A With Gloria

1. Why does Gloria want to run as a Federal Conservative?

I am dedicated to building a stronger Canada, and to fully representing Guelph in Ottawa. My commitment to my country and community, as well as my diverse expertise, continue to be an asset to the City.

As a lifelong Conservative, I believe this party is the best option for Canadians. I’m committed to good governance and that is what the Federal Conservatives are about.

2. Why is Gloria keeping her Council position while running for the Federal Conservatives?

Under the municipal act, I am required to resign only prior to being sworn into Parliament. I have been dedicated to Ward 4 for 17 years, and I do not believe in quitting. I’m committed to serving Guelph.

It’s also been past practice, not only in Guelph, but also for past MPs who have served on municipal council, to continue to serve until being sworn in.

3. Why did Gloria’s term as President and Board Chair of the Federal of Canadian Municipalities end two months early?

At 16 months, I was one of the longest-serving Presidents of FCM. A normal term for a President is one year.

The FCM has recognized my leadership abilities and my commitment to municipal government, and I am proud of the accomplishments I made during my term. Regretfully, forces beyond my control prompted an early end to my term. Soon after, the other members of FCM wrote a statement of apology, which I have accepted.

4. Why did Gloria become involved in politics?

I have always been involved in the community, and when I decided to run for City Council, I felt that Ward 4 was not being properly represented, as Guelph is not being represented now in Ottawa. I wanted to make a difference.

Others also encouraged me to run. When I would walk my children to school, the other mother’s would say to me, “You’ve really done a lot in our community, you’ve done a lot in representing us and you need to run.” So I did.

That was back in 1991. At the time, Gloria was only one of two women on council. Today, she is the longest serving councilor in the City of Guelph.

5. What has been Gloria’s most rewarding experience in politics?

It has been very rewarding being able to better people’s quality of life, from enhancing service delivery in the City of Guelph, to building healthier communities internationally.

Whether I’m at an event overseas, or talking to MPs, it has also been rewarding to be able to profile Guelph at a national and international level.

6. Why would Gloria be a good choice for Guelph?

This is a community that I love. It’s where I grew up, and where my family lives. That has added to my passion to serve, and make the City even stronger for its diverse groups of citizens.

I am committed to strong fiscal management and good governance, and my extensive experience at the local, national and international level would be of great benefit in Ottawa.

As well, being a nurse gives me a commitment to caring about the City that is unique.

7. What does Gloria like to do in her spare time?

I really enjoy spending time with family and friends, as well as cooking, reading, gardening, and motorcycling.

8. What would be Gloria’s dream trip?

I would love to go to a cooking school in Italy.

9. What would Gloria say has been her biggest accomplishments?

Raising my family. That is absolutely my biggest accomplishment. Another accomplishment has been going back to school to pursue higher education.
