Real Leadership on the World Stage

Real Leadership On The World Stage

Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper concludes his diplomatic trip to Europe after meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Prime Minister will also be delivering a speech in London outlining the Conservative Government’s strong actions to combat climate change.

As Part of the Government’s Turning the Corner Plan Canada has, for the first time ever, concrete greenhouse gas reduction targets for all major emitting industries.

This is a far cry from what Canadians saw from the previous Liberal government over their 13 years in power. As Environment Minster, Stéphane Dion was quick to lecture others about the environment, yet he failed to live up to his own responsibilities. As a result of the staggering weak leadership and inaction of Stéphane Dion and his Liberal friends, Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions actually skyrocketed 32% above Canada’s mandated Kyoto targets.

It is no wonder that Mr. Dion’s own deputy leader condemned the Dion record of failure when he scolded “Stéphane, we didn’t get it done.”

Fortunately for Canadians, the Liberal era of false promises and empty rhetoric has been replaced by a Conservative commitment to real action and real results. Canadians are right to expect that their government will show real action to improve the environment. They are also right to expect that any international effort to combat climate change must include all major emitting countries and not draw artificial distinctions among nations that will undermine any real results.

At home and abroad, the Conservative Government is standing up for Canadian priorities and, in both words and actions, doing what it takes to ensure a cleaner, greener future for us all.

Real Leadership. Real Action. Real Results.
