Today, Canadian consumers have a dizzying array of choices on their store shelves.
Whether you are shopping for food, children’s toys or any other household product, Canadians can pick and choose from products grown or manufactured in almost every corner of the world.
With this increased choice comes an increased challenge to ensure our product safety laws keep up with the times.
Previous Liberal governments let Canada’s product safety laws fall completely out of date. The resulting risk to the health and safety of Canadian families is unacceptable.
This Conservative Government is making up for years of Liberal neglect by taking real action on product safety now.
Products sold in Canada must clearly and transparently adhere to Canadian standards of quality, regardless of country of origin.
Under the Conservative Government’s new product safety laws, manufacturers and importers will be held accountable for the safety of the products they sell.
In addition, for the first time ever, the federal government will have the power to automatically yank dangerous products form store shelves when a company fails to act.
Upon learning of potential long-term health concerns, the Conservative Government has quickly moved to ban the use of a chemical called bisphenol A in baby bottles and other children’s products.
And the Conservative Government will continue to ensure Canadian consumers have more accurate and up-to-date information on the quality and safety of their products than ever before.
When it comes to the health of our children and grandchildren, Liberal talk is not good enough. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government will continue to deliver real action and real results for Canadians.
