Dion Advisors Confess Carbon Tax Won’t Be “Painless”

As Stéphane Dion polishes his sales pitch for his upcoming carbon tax trick, many of his senior advisors are breaking from his phony “green shift” propaganda and admitting that real Canadians will end up hurting should Mr. Dion get his way.

Liberal Finance Critic John McCallum has conceded that the Dion Tax Trick will punish many Canadian families saying in interviews, “I cannot say to you that no Canadian will be unharmed by this,” and admitting that a Dion-style carbon tax is “not going to be totally painless for every human being.” (Canadian Press, June 15, 2008).

This sentiment was echoed by Professor Marc Jaccard, one of Canada’s leading carbon tax experts who said “No politician, economist or environmentalist has ever implied an environmental tax shift would mean everyone is equally well off as before," before adding, “some people will be better off and some won't.” (Toronto Sun June 15, 2008)

To summarize; between the two of them, Mr McCallum and Professor Jaccard have confirmed that a carbon tax:

  • Will not leave Canadians “unharmed”
  • Is “not going to be totally painless”
  • Will not leave “everyone as well off as before”
  • And will ensure some Canadians “won’t” be “better off” than before.

If two of Canada’s biggest carbon tax boosters are conceding this much about a carbon tax, you can be sure that the real cost of the Dion Tax Trick will be far more painful than either he or his spin doctors would currently have you believe.

It is time for Mr. Dion to leave the trickery, the weasel-words, the excuses and the phony labels behind.  It’s time for answers.  Stéphane Dion must drop the trickery and be honest with Canadians about who will be left hurting under his true Carbon Tax plan.

The Dion Tax Trick.  Everybody sees through it.
