Liberal leader still owes hundreds of thousands; will be in violation of Canadian election laws
All eyes are on Stéphane Dion and his hundreds of thousands of dollars of outstanding leadership debts. Today is the Elections Canada deadline for candidates from the 2006 Liberal leadership race to have paid off their loans and outstanding debts. Otherwise, they will be in violation of Canada’s election laws.
As of the last publicly required reporting deadline, Stéphane Dion still has hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid leadership debts. To put this into context, even if the entire Liberal Party had dedicated every single cent raised in the first three months of 2008 to Mr. Dion’s debts, he would only barely be able to pay off what he owes.
If Mr. Dion does not repay these debts today, they become illegal donations over the donation limit. His only escape will be to ask Elections Canada to step in and grant him an extension to protect him from his fundraising failures.
The fact that Stéphane Dion has run up these enormous debts shows that he is a weak leader that cannot be trusted with the nation’s finances.
Stéphane Dion. Not a leader. Not worth the risk.
